How Often Should you See the Dentist?

Decades ago, dentistry was more about fixing oral health problems than preventing them. It wasn't normal for people to visit the dentist routinely for checkups or cleanings, but rather, they'd only visit the dentist if an issue arose. Fortunately, dentists have since learned that prevention is the most surefire means to keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Nowadays, dentists recommend a certain amount of visits per year, and will encourage those at a higher risk for oral health issues to perform more rigorous daily hygiene efforts.

How Often Should you See the Dentist?

On average, it's recommended you visit the dentist at least twice per year to ensure your oral health is up to speed. While some people can get away with fewer visits, the majority of people benefit from these routine checkups. Your dentist has the opportunity to catch oral health issues early, while they're easily treatable. And these regular visits help keep your their teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

While twice a year is the minimum recommendation by the American Dental Association (ADA), those at an elevated risk for oral health issues should visit the dentist more often. Take a look below at some of the risk factors that might warrant a few extra trips to the dentist each year.

Reasons to See the Dentist More Often

A variety of genetic or lifestyle factors can put you at an increased risk for things like cavities or gum disease, and thus necessitate more visits to the dentist to ensure you're on the right track in your oral health. Some of those high-risk people might include:

  • Smokers
  • Pregnant women
  • Diabetics
  • Those with a history of gum disease
  • Those with a weak immune response to bacteria
  • People at a heightened risk for cavities

While these risk factors might mean you have to visit the dentist more often, or perform more steps in your daily hygiene routine, it's important to understand your specific oral health needs to avoid harmful complications like tooth decay and gum disease.
