Fighting Gum Disease: What is Arestin®?

Periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease, is one of the most common oral health issues among American adults. Whether in its mild form as gingivitis, or full periodontitis, gum disease needs to be addressed as soon as symptoms arise, especially when it's in the initial stages. What may start as gingivitis can easily progress into the more serious gum disease, which will car for more invasive and time-extensive treatment. What's even more concerning is most people with gum disease are unaware they have it and they seek treatment once it has already progressed. While treatment for gingivitis is more simple, such for periodontitis warrants quite a bit more. Fortunately, Dr. Jason L. Downey offers a couple of effective treatments, including Arestin®!

Gum Disease and Common Treatments

As a quick refresher, gum disease results when the bacteria constantly residing in our mouths combines with acids from foods and drinks to form plaque. Though brushing and flossing work to remove plaque, any that remains from poor oral care will harden to tartar. The residing bacteria from such will begin to infect the gums and cause inflammation, known as gingivitis. When left untreated, gingivitis leads to periodontitis, where the gums begin to pull away from the teeth. Those spaces left between the gums and teeth are called pockets, and are prone to bacteria and infection.

Common treatments for such involve tartar removal, called scaling and root planing. In this, the tartar is removed from above and below the gumline (scaling), then any rough spots on the root of the teeth are removed to prevent the gathering of bacteria (root planing). From here, your dentist or periodontist may prescribe a medication or apply one to control the bacteria. In which case Dr. Downey will utilize Arestin®.

What is Arestin®?

A powder-like medication, Arestin® is applied much like other gum disease medications, which is within the pockets of the infected gums. Proven to be effective in treating gum disease and controlling bacteria after scaling and root planing, Arestin® is typically applied directly after the scaling and planing process.

Treatment with Arestin® is fairly easy as well. As mentioned, Dr. Downey will place the powder-like medication above and below the gumline and it will dissolve on its own, requiring no follow-up appointment for removal! It's also seen as advantageous because of its direct placement within the gums. Other treatments often involve taking a pill of sorts, which obviously isn't directed right at the gums like Arestin®. Instead, the antibiotic minocycline hydrochloride is placed directly within the gums to kill bacteria.
